The Top 10 Difference Between a Friend and a Bestfriend

Whenever a friend goes off to another part of the world whether to study, to seek their fortunes, to conquer, to take a much needed break, we always send them off in the best possible way. To me, my great circle of friends and the best family anyone can ask for, this doesn’t mean fancy sendoffs in hotels and yachts. It means honest I-hope-you’ll-find-what-you’re-looking-for-but-I’ll-miss-you-and-I-hope-you’ll-miss-me-too-and-always-email-me, its laughter about everything under the sun over drinks, its tears of sadness and joy, and hopes of seeing each other again really soon. Speaking as someone whose friends and family are scattered all over the globe, I can say, with feelings (yes, even the movie-style full of chuvaness type of feelings) that one can never have too many friends. I think I’m just truly blessed that my great circle of bestfriends consist of family as well.

In tribute to my framily, here and overseas, I’ve stolen another of TMR’s top tens: The Top Ten Difference Between a Friend and a Bestfriend. This makes it clear that I don’t have much friends, only a great bunch of Bestfriends.

1. No name – A friend is someone you call to confide that you just killed someone. A best friend is someone who’ll show up at your door with a shovel.
2. KiD BuKid – A friend will rush to your aid if you fall flat on your face. A best friend will laugh and yell, “tanga!”
3. Young Indy – A friend returns a favor. A best friend doesn’t because there are no favors between best friends.

Marcos Laid To Rest

 

I saw on the news that President Marcos will be laid to rest at Ilocos. It’s a sensitive issue and I’ve deliberately stayed away from these things as much as I can and kept to lighter subjects. I also know that this post may generate hate comments, but its one of the issues I feel strongly about and so here is only the second blog of mine dealing with something of this nature. Another factor affecting this decision is my young, brilliant perfect niece and godchild Alex who is is in sixth grade which is two grade levels up for her age. She’s one of my readers mostly because of the funny stuff I put in here. This blog has the second aim of  gradually exposing her to such things, and letting her know that there are some things she ought to know about her heritage and that contrary to popular belief, there are still some reasons for her to be proud to be a Filipino.

It’s good that Pangulong Marcos will now be laid to rest.

This is a man who chose to step down from Malacanan Palace rather than open fire on the protesters – the exact opposite of what the supposed peaceful Cory administration did to farmer protesters in Mendiola. Mistake were committed during his regime, like mistakes were committed by all the regimes, but I think after all these years and all these presidents who came after, we can all see that Marcos was by far the best among them.

Nowadays you will be hard pressed to find such a thing called Philippine Pride. majority of the on-going infrastructure improvements we’re seeing were Marcos plans being executed by the predecessors who conveniently forget that neither the plan not the money was theirs and take full credit anyway. The still standing and still the best CCP, Heart Center, Lung Center, and a handful of others are Marcos projects. None of those who followed him were able to come up with anything remotely like these.

Yet when we speak of Marcos we speak of only the wrongs committed, and wrongs committed during the later part of his rule. Decades later, we now see that majority of these were planned and executed by people down the pole without any of it passing through Marcos himself. The older people used to say all the time: “Marcos ruled this nation for two decades. For better or worse, history will show us.”

Now, two decades after his death, after Cory, Ramos, Erap and Gloria, history has clearly shown us that Marcos ruled us for the better. Libingan Ng Mga Bayani would have been more suitable a resting place for such a man, but as he stepped down rather than open fire on protesters then, were he alive today I think he will rest at his hometown of Ilocos rather than cause divide among Filipinos now.

Ilocos will certainly welcome him home, will be happy to return some of the service and love he’s given them during his reign, and will love him even more now that he’s spent his life for them.

Should Bongbong Marcos turn out to be half the man his late father was, then all is not lost. Mr. Marcos Jr., unite and lead this country where Aquino Jr. refused to and is incapable of doing so. We work hard, we do what is right; we deserve a better Philippines, and you can make this happen for us.
